RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
